‘Whatever happened to the intended town of Clarence ?? … It was started by Peel but fell over. Total failure. Archaeologist Shane Burke excavated and wrote about it a few years ago. Those poor people - to come all this way and end up in a shanty town in the sand dunes, locked in by a contract, so they couldn’t even leave… Excellent archaeological sleuthing there as well ! I worked as a Librarian around the traps for a long time - the fascinating information held in dusty boxes in back rooms in this town is amazing. No-one really seems to value it; and I spent some time gathering up old account books written in copperplate, and crumbling photos, and shipping them off to the State Records Office as fast as I could. At least that way future historians can find it when they need it - and this paper is an excellent example of why it’s important’
